Cheap Garmin nuvi 2515LT 5" Sat Nav

Review and Buying Guide of Cheap Garmin nuvi 2515LT 5

A good product but needs better instructions. The actual sat nav is good - clear maps and good directions. The suggestion of which lane to be in in a multi lane highway is particularly useful. The trouble i found with it is that the various menus seem to ne laid out in an haphazard way making it difficult to use the features the sat nav came with.

In some cases the speed limit on some roads are not according to the road signs.

Pros

  • Nuvi 2515LT is easy to use.
  • A good Sat nav for the asking price
  • Not happy with maps
  • A good product but needs better instructions
  • It takes you where you want to Go!!!
  • Garmin Nuvi 2515LT

Cons

  • Garmin 2515 with 'iffy' Bluetooth
  • Traffic is a waste of Time
  • satnav with bluetooth

  • Nuvi 2515lt Is Easy to Use.. This product was very easy to setup. The visual instructions and voice instructions are good and clear to follow. If i go off track (i. E. I do not follow the instructions) it automatically works out a new route without making a 'big scene' about it. There does not appear to be a way of adding a pin to prevent misuse, should the satnav be stolen; my other garmin satnav has this facility. .

Sat Nav. Excellent sat nav this is my second garmin. Only draw back is the lead goes into the back of the device and not into the shoe, so you can not just take it off the shoe leaving everthing else in place. Otherwise i would have gave this five stars. .

My First Satnav. Well, technically my second. I was offered the loan of one for a touring holiday in scotland and was surprised how effective it was. So i decided on the 2515lt with lifetime traffic reports. The only real shortcoming of the model i borrowed. The 2515 works ok, but on the two trips i've used it on i see no sign of the traffic avoidance system actually working at all. It finds traffic servers ok (or says it does) but on the two trips i've taken since buying it let me drive straight into lengthy delays on established roadworks without offering me the chance to exit at the junction beforehand & get around them. My loan unit (a 1340) gave a single beep for all alerts. The 2515 gives a treble beep despite the menu indicating a choice between a single tone, or continuous one. Clearly an interpretation of the word 'single' that i have not encountered before. One of the reasons i held off buying a satnav for years was people telling me you could only force your choice of route by using the 'via' function. . Something i tried on my loan unit but could not get to work properly. Possibly me being even more dense than usual. The 2515 has a 'trip' function which i did get to work correctly, but i discovered the 'basecamp' software free on garmin's site that lets you create a route and upload it to their units. Runs at a snails pace on my laptop, so i need to try it on my desktop to see how good it actually is. Would i buy another 2515?. No. I'd go for the loan model i had (1340 still available for £80) without the traffic avoidance system and use the basecamp software to upload my routes, saving myself £45 and my ears from those irritating treble-beeps. .

Conclusion of Garmin nuvi 2515LT 5" Sat Nav

I purchased this sat nav after having the garmin nuvi 250 before. I really liked the facility to view the entire route and simply zoom in on any part of the route so i can decide whether i wish to stick to the route or use local knowledge to bypass traffic hotspots. That said it is a good sat nav, which i use all the time for my work. I am pleased with the traffic information and very much like the facility to have an alternative route (with timings). What an excellent sat nav, bought this for my husband after reading the product reviews. He is very impressed with the blootooth phone connection through the sat nav, which means he can leave his phone in his pocket whilst driving. I do not follow the instructions) it automatically works out a new route without making a 'big scene' about it. Excellent sat nav this is my second garmin.

One of the reasons i held off buying a satnav for years was people telling me you could only force your choice of route by using the 'via' function. I'd go for the loan model i had (1340 still available for £80) without the traffic avoidance system and use the basecamp software to upload my routes, saving myself £45 and my ears from those irritating treble-beeps. I picked up one of these in a blowout deal at a local retailer, i also got the home charger and case includedthe reason i looked at this model was despite newer nuvi models being out there, this garmin is a bit older, but it has a few extra bits included that the updated entry models don'tbluetooth is one (tested it and it works just fine, you pair up devices and they work great and saves the need to buy another bluetooh device)eco driving, this monitors the braking and acceleration, and fuel economy (and you can set these values including fuel cost) this seems like a gimmick, but i honestly find it does encourage better driving and fuel efficiencythe search function is more advanced than the entry modelsthis model comes with the fm lead to get traffic updates, though if you buy the cheaper one it doesn't come with that (you can pick it up yourself) traffic updates are 'ok' but could be improved, some regions have weaker coveragei've been updating the maps and software frequently (i have lifetime uk and roi maps) garmin are quite good with this, but as others note it does take some time for newer roads to appear on the updates.

Software wise garmin have been updating this with firmware and other fixes, i've mostly found the sat nav to be reliable and with decent routing (previous rac model was great at sending you down small country lanes)of most use is the ability to find points of interest, be it a hotel, petrol station, shopping areas or even a local cafe. This model does have audible alerts for safety cameras and speed limits (you can turn this off if you want)to date it's been a reliable unit, very few issues to note. I do find the newer garmin entry models lacking the advanced search and with less features (that i find useful) so i do recommend this model based on that alone. Grab yourself a bargain sat navupdate 05/14:sat nav working fine, though garmin could be a bit more on the ball with their map updates (they do update the maps but in some cases some areas are not as up to date as they should be)firmware has been updated to 8. 90i use the garmin express to update the unit on my pcit's not a perfect sat nav, but on balance it's pretty useful and the price is quite fair.

In some cases the speed limit on some roads are not according to the road signs. The actual sat nav is good - clear maps and good directions. The trouble i found with it is that the various menus seem to ne laid out in an haphazard way making it difficult to use the features the sat nav came with. Excellent product, does exactly what's required. Quick to pick up gps and re-calcs well based on traffic updates.

The new garmin is to replace my old tomtom and what a great replacement, forgot how out of date my tomtom was, the garmin looks better as well, would recommend. Daughter tells me she thinks her sat nav is brilliant - gives loads of information on roads, speed cameras, etc. A vast improvement on the sat nav i had (not garmin). Very accurate and timely voice directions, but will need more use of product to get full benefit of all the options.

On the plus side, the display is clear and shows your speed, the speed limits, what kind of speed control arrangements are in force and an estimated time of arrival. It also shows which road you are going to be on next, but not always the one you are on nowi find the voice instructions annoying because they are strangely worded (for instance 'turn left on a16' rather than 'turn left onto a16') and repeated too often, but brian is ok with these. The audible speed warnings are also annoying, particularly the ones that say there are speed cameras along this piece of road or that you are now within the speed limit. Easy to mute volume directly from the main navigation screen - i find the voice directions irritating. Quick and easy to find a filling station - just outside richmond park on a bank holiday and in loads of traffic, in our casei didn't make use of the mobile phone bluetooth features on trips but i see one can easily pair a phone, make use of the phone contacts data etc.

Works out of the box and has been a welcomed upgrade from the previous one with a smaller screen. . I love this sat nav, it has a nice big screen, easy to use. I think the split screen is really useful and it make it clear as to the direction you need to go when u reach major turn offs on motorways. Appears only missing advance route guidance (ie you can put in current location to destination a, and then select a destination b, c etc, it will give the eta of last destination - but can only see current route to a, not a to b, nor can you start at point a and route to b.

Gives appropriate lane guidance, plenty of warnings, well spoken voice and can update your car image to be displayed (with additional models avail online - not yet played with this feature but could be fun. But on the plus side its fast working and easy to use. Screen is clear and easy to follow. Have a huge garmin logo on my screen when i switch on now. This was due to not finding a road that opened in the middle of last year.

Map and spoken directions is good. It may pay to buy the map upgrades when you need them. Bluetooth works fine and easy installation.

Could Be Better. Could be better. Rather disappointed with this. Its seems dated even compared to my other satnav which is about 8 years older than this one. It was way out of date and seems indecisive on which route to take. It often takes me on longer routes than necessary. The graphics and operation are poor and long winded. On the positive side, the approach to where a change in direction on motorways is good as it shows a photo of the approaching slip road and indicates where you need to be. The suction cup on the window is weak. The port to plug it into the car is at the rear and awkward. The lead to the plug would have been better as a coiled wire rather than the straight wire as it gets snagged. I think there are better devices available. Was disappointed as i expected a vast improvement on my old model even though it was a different maker. .

Cheap TomTom ONE XL V1 Satellite Navigation System

Review and Buying Guide of Cheap TomTom ONE XL V1 Satellite Navigation System

I've only had this tomtom a few days & it is brilliant. I'm going on holiday to italy later on this year so i can't wait to use it over there. Using it in the uk has never got me lost and the mapshare function is fantastic. My dad borrowed my tomtom one xl europe off me yesterday as he was buying a car in london.

It got him there no problem and my dad didn't get lost once. I had a little trouble using my 2gb sd card in the tomtom but tomtom sent me an e-mail and told me what to do in simple, easy, step by step way. Word of warning - the tomtom one xl europe will only accept up to a 2gb sd card. On the whole it is a brilliant piece of kit.

Very pleased with this item, have only used the uk maps so far. Looking forward to using the usa maps for an impending trip. Also came loaded with australia and new zealand maps. Decided to buy this via amazon as having monitored auction sites they, were invariably more expensive due to a bidding frenzy just before the close of auction.

Also less consumer protection. Disappointed with the mount supplied as will not fit my car windscreen. This is not a fault of the mount but, due to the steep angle of the screen. Therefore have decided to buy a non slip dashboard mount at £5. All in all a very good service from the retailer, would and have recommended to friends and family.

    Pros

    • Takes the hassle out of navigating unfamiliar roads
    • Good but beware of the complications of adding maps
    • Great SatNav let down by poor accessories
    • Fantastic bit of kit!
    • Tom Tom one XL europe
    • Not perfect but does the job

    Cons

    • Don' buy a Tom Tom!
    • Gets you there, when its working.
    • Tomtom one XL Europe
    • Just too inacurate

Negative Review of TomTom ONE XL V1 Satellite Navigation System - Europe

    • Great Satnav Let Down by Poor Accessories. Having upgraded from navigator 5 on a pda, i am familiar and very happy with the tomtom product. Also no longer having to fiddle with an external bluetooth gps device is great. As a lot of other reviewers have pointed out, the accessories are poor. I would expect at a minimum:- a home charger- a carry case (even a nylon one would have been useful)- a windscreen mount that actually stays attached to the windscreen. The one provided is cheap rubbish, and is more of a safety hazard as it decides to detach itself in mid journeyso great product, but you will need to shell out at least another 40-50 pounds to get the necessary extras. .

Tomtom-Tastic. I bought this at the channel tunnel dixons before going to paris this week, a i wasn't looking forward to driving round the periphique with one eye on the map between my legs and one eye on the lunatic pierres dodging between the cars on their scooters. I took it out the box on the train and it was ready to go when i got to france. It did a great job most of the time and made the whole experience more pleasant. The screen resolution is not as good as on my nokia 9300i (which i have tomtom uk on) but is easy enough to read. It did try to make me turn right into a block of flats a couple of times but soon sorted itelf out by calculating another route when i went straight on. It got me to the exhibition site i was going to and back and forth to my hotel with no fuss. It would have 5 stars but i think it is a little mean of tomtom not to incude a case or mains charger. I haven't looked at other satnav units so i have nothing to compare it to, but so far it has done what i want it to do. In summary this unit provides easy to use navigation straight out of the box with a simple user interface. .

Fantastic Bit of Kit!. We recently booked to go to germany to visit some of the many christmas markets around the patch. Not wanting any domestic strife we decided to buy a tom tom xl europe to help us on our way. All i can say about this decision is that it was the right thing to do. I took delivery and quickly checked it out the day before we left the uk without issue. On arrival in germany we collected the car turned on the tom tom selected germany entered our destination left the airport car park and one hour later - hey presto - arrived where we planned to be!in fact the only time we ended up somewhere we didn't quite anticipate was because of user error! yup, i hate to say it but we missed the fact that there are two rudesheim's in germany! however, once we realised this fact and reprogrammed 'fanny' (our pet name for the voice of jane on the tom tom) she led us right there!! easy.

Conclusion of TomTom ONE XL V1 Satellite Navigation System

I bought a tom tom one xl with uk and western europe maps in july 2007, and i can thoroughly recommend it. A word of warning about the accompanying pc software: i nearly killed my unit whilst updating the main operating system on it. I had connected it to my pc prior to lending it to a friend - the software said that there were ephemeral updates (those are updates on what parts of the earth each satellite is orbiting), and also a newer version of the main program. I applied the updates after making space but when i tried restoring the temporarily-removed maps etc. My main gripe is the rather frustrating procedure to add additional maps which is not sufficiently documented by tomtom (i had to search a few forums before i figured it out).

I bought the us western region map from the tomtom website which was a 200mb download, so you would think that a 1gb sd card would be sufficient for using it on the tomtom xl. The tomtom xl out of the box has a 1gb internal memory which is shipped totally 'full' with the western europe map and the tomtom software itself, so understandably you can't add any maps to the 'core memory'. So the solution is to add memory by way of an sd card, but the tomtom cannot use an sd card and internal memory at the same time, so in short if you want to add any additional maps to this unit you need to purchase an sd card with the capacity for your additional maps plus 1gb for the existing map and os. Once you've bought your 2gb sd card and you have your new map(s) downloaded to your pc you need to follow the steps below (best to switch the unit off and on after each step). Make sure you've installed the latest version of the tomtom home software on your pc before you begin.

Connect the tomtom to your pc (without the sd card inserted) and 'backup' the unit to your pc using the tomtom home software (takes about 20min). Insert your sd card into the tomtom and 'restore' your backup from the pc back to the unit, again using the tomtom home software (takes about 20mins). These first two steps basically write the contents of the internal memory on to the sd card. Finally click 'add maps' in the tomtom home software on your pc and hopefully it should take you to a screen showing the additional map(s) you've bought and downloaded. You can then add these to the tomtom unit from here.

During use the unit won't automatically switch between your maps, so in my case when i want to use my us map i need to 'switch over' in the unit preferences. Having upgraded from navigator 5 on a pda, i am familiar and very happy with the tomtom product. The screen resolution is not as good as on my nokia 9300i (which i have tomtom uk on) but is easy enough to read. It would have 5 stars but i think it is a little mean of tomtom not to incude a case or mains charger. Not wanting any domestic strife we decided to buy a tom tom xl europe to help us on our way.

On arrival in germany we collected the car turned on the tom tom selected germany entered our destination left the airport car park and one hour later - hey presto - arrived where we planned to bein fact the only time we ended up somewhere we didn't quite anticipate was because of user error. I then re-read several of them and realised that there were just as many positive comments as there was negative for all brands and so decided to take the plunge and bought a tomtom one xl europe. The internal memory is almost full and, as others have said, there are therefore problems updating the application. Some of the problems with updates are clearly caused by the internal 1gb memory being >99. I got around this by installing a 2gb sd memory card, which only cost £5-7, and running everything; system, maps etc.

Instructions: first install the tomtom home2 software - turn off automatic updates (before you connect the tt) - connect the device and do a full back-up to your disk. Then copy the entire contents of the original backup folder onto the sd card - say using a multicard reader - make sure to keep the file structure note: you cannot do this if the sd card is installed in the tt. Insert the sd card into the tt hopefully it should boot from the sd card, connect it to your pc and turn back on autoupdates on home2 and say yes to all the updates. These will be installed on the sd card. Then you are up and running with all the updates done and no memory space issues - of course the sd card then stays in the tt for good.

Occasionally proposes to take you down one-way streets or doesn't know there is no right turn allowed (but catches up when you do the legal thing) - so maps not 100% correct. I think some of these negative reviews have been unfair to the tomtom xl; i have nothing but praise for it. I have always checked the route offered by any unit against a map, and will sometimes alter the route planning criteria to be more effective as required. The tomtom software is simple to use with the clear touch screen. It does have a sd card slot for extra maps.

I prefer to use a permanent dashboard hard-wired mount for my unit, although the suction cup mount and cables seem perfectly adequate for many applications. We received the tom tom about a week ago and can't believe how easy to use the system is, its connects to the computer easily and downloads every update you need without fuss. The only drawback, and this is very slight, is that it comes with a promotion card which, i assume, allows you to access items on the tom tom site that you otherwise could not. I've only had this tomtom a few days & it is brilliant. My dad borrowed my tomtom one xl europe off me yesterday as he was buying a car in london.

I had a little trouble using my 2gb sd card in the tomtom but tomtom sent me an e-mail and told me what to do in simple, easy, step by step way. Word of warning - the tomtom one xl europe will only accept up to a 2gb sd card. Also i can't understand how some could not easily unclip tomtom whilst leaving mount in place. The whole mount is flexible and can be pulled forward in order to slide out tomtom. As with all tomtoms i've seen one's the instructions are clear, recalculating routes is automatic if you miss your turning, and the map upgrade method online is easy, and includes safety cameras which is always handy, as they seem to be everwhere.

I have just upgraded from the original tomtom one and i am very pleased so far. Quickly locates signal from satellites and even locates a signal inside my house, where the old tomtom one could not. I was very surprised that the device has no sd card though, the maps are built in. There is an sd slot though which means i can buy more maps and run them side by side, or allow for more downloads. I have the europe version, so this may slow it down, but it does seem to take longer to find a route on a long journey, but on that same note, it seems to find better routes sometimes too, taking off a few minutes sometimes, might be the new maps maybe.

Don't Be Put Off . Having read some of the very negative review of the tt-xl-eur i was almost put off buying one. However i took the chance and i have to say so far (2 weeks) i have been mostly impressed. I have had no problems with "unable to find satellites". Some of the problems with updates are clearly caused by the internal 1gb memory being >99. 5%% full - simply there is not enough free memory to do the upgrades (or to install add-ons). I got around this by installing a 2gb sd memory card, which only cost £5-7, and running everything; system, maps etc. On that (the internal memory is no longer used when you install the sd). Instructions: first install the tomtom home2 software - turn off automatic updates (before you connect the tt) - connect the device and do a full back-up to your disk. Then make another copy the resulting back-up folder somewhere else and rename it - this is your insurance against losing the files in the future for whatever reason (e. G. If you lose the sd card). Then do another backup - this will overwrite the original backup; hence the need to have another copy of the original backup in another location. Then you are up and running with all the updates done and no memory space issues - of course the sd card then stays in the tt for good. Pros: mostly everything - nice bright/large display, good menu structure, no unnecessary voice commands etc etc. Mounting brackets sticks well. Cons:tt cannot be removed from mounting bracket while it is stuck to the windscreen - you have to remove the whole suction assembly; due to the slope of the screen. Typing on the keyboard (e. G. Postcode/address) can be tricky with my big fingers. Occasionally proposes to take you down one-way streets or doesn't know there is no right turn allowed (but catches up when you do the legal thing) - so maps not 100% correct. .

Not Perfect But Does the Job. The sat nav works out of the box and has a fairly easy menu system - easy to get the hang of it without reading the manual. It works well while you are driving and has guided me through many european cities. Map accuracy is a bit variable: sometimes it surprises me with the detail of off-road tracks, and sometimes it is out of date. The internal memory is almost full and, as others have said, there are therefore problems updating the application. I found if you back-up the device and delete the post-code data it will then has enough free memory to update the application correctly - the post-codes then have to be reinstalled. Not the slickest of updates! despie these niggles, very please with the way it works. .

The Best Garmin Nuvi 1310 4

Review and Buying Guide of The Best Garmin Nuvi 1310 4

I purchased this sat nav as i changed my car and no longer have one built into the car. I can honestly say it's far superior to the one i used to have in my audi with clear directions that took me straight to my destination rather than the general area. The only downside was the annoying beeping that warned me when i was speeding. A great bit of kit that i thoroughly recommend.

Garmin nuvi 1310 satellite navigation with uk mapping i was not really convinced that i needed a sat nav until i borrowed a friend's for an unfamiliar journey. I was really impressed with the borrowed unit so set about researching available sat navs purely for the uk. After several weeks of research i finally decided upon the garmin nuvi 1310. Setting the unit up was relatively simple and it works a treat out on the roads.

I would recommend this unit to anyone. A really good unit, great service from, and a very good price on, amazon.

      Pros

      • Good for the money!
      • pleased - it works well - a few niggles
      • Better than another I borrowed!
      • Well made/straightforward but a little disappointing in use
      • Garmin Nuvi 1310
      • Good, but some issues

      Cons

      • Dissapointing. Doesn't have all postcodes
      • Nuvi OK Maps dreadful

Negative Review of Garmin Nuvi 1310 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Ireland Maps and Bluetooth

It announces street names before you turn so you always know where you are going, for example, 'Turn right at Dell Road'.
Lane Assist helps you get into the correct lane in plenty of time which is particularly useful near busy junctions. It illustrates up to nine lanes in the top left-hand corner of the main map screen, with the distance to the exit and which lanes to take.

Make hands free phone calls, Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel with nuvi 1310's integrated Bluetooth wireless technology, microphone and speaker. Just pair with your compatible mobile phone and talk hands-free through the nuvi. You can also search for a place of interest on your Garmin nuvi (such as a hotel or restaurant) and call it simply by pressing the telephone icon on your sat nav's screen. It means you can stow your phone in your glovebox, bag or pocket and let your sat nav do the work. To see if your phone is compatible, go to www.garmin.com/bluetooth/phones.jsp

Great on the go - driving, walking or on public transport, Just 15mm thick, this sleek and compact widescreen sat nav fits easily in your pocket making it great for use in or out of the car. Use to its full potential by downloading cityXplorer via www.Garmin.co.uk/cityXplorer to navigate like a local. The enhanced pedestrian mode gives you directions for walking including footpaths and shortcuts through parks - places you wouldn't be accessing while in your car. It also tells you where to catch trains, buses and tubes (dependent on the city), and how long it will take to reach your destination. cityXplorer even has public transport timetables to ensure you arrive at the station on time and help avoid long waits (dependent on the city).
To make the most of your Garmin sat nav when exploring a new city, whether on a day trip, a holiday or for business, you can also add an optional AA City Guide. It tells you everything you need to know about your chosen city from attractions and places to eat, hotels and shops.

New or moved cameras are constantly tracked and the database is updated daily.

Go Green and save fuel, The ecoRoute fuel-saver feature enables you to choose a fuel-efficient route which could save you fuel and money. Simply choose the 'less fuel' option and nuvi 1310 will calculate the route which will use the least fuel. You can also see the estimated cost of your journey as you plan it and get scored for your driving performance with the Driving Challenge - good for identifying areas for improvement.

Where am I? safety feature, The Where am I? safety feature can be very helpful if you break down or need a certain service urgently. Just tap the car icon on your map screen for your exact coordinates, contact details for vehicle recovery services and directions to hospitals, police and petrol stations.

Anti-Theft feature, You can choose to activate The Garmin Lock anti-theft protection system to disable your Garmin sat nav from performing any functions until a specific 4-digit PIN is typed in or the unit is taken to a predetermined location. Simply enter a 4-digit PIN and select a Security Location.  Write down your PIN and keep it in a safe place.  Each time you turn on the GPS, enter your PIN to unlock the GPS.  If you forget your PIN, you can go to your Security Location. Note: If you forget your PIN, and your Security Location, Garmin cannot unlock your GPS over the phone; you must send your GPS to Garmin to get it unlocked.

Extras for your Garmin, There are lots of extras you can add to your Garmin sat nav. These include travel guides such as AA Days Out, The Good Pub Guide, historical audio tours and more. You can also have some fun by adding celebrity voices. If you're a music fan you may want to download the locations festivals in the UK, or if you want to go on a shopping trip the locations of shopping centres. See www.garmin.co.uk/garminextras for more information.

Pleased - It Works Well - a Few Niggles. This is my first satnav. I bought it because on holiday in unfamilier parts of southern england, i had to keep pulling over to stop and look at the map, and often having to reverse direction. I think all these negotiations increase ones chances of an incident. This satnav works well, easy to follow and not distracting. Nice choice of male or female voice. Good screen displays. The menus are not that easy to follow, but once the basic things you want are in place, its ok. Switch on, set your destination from your favourites list and go!if you deviate from the calculated route, it re-calculates very quickly. Only used locally in rural west wales so far. The other niggle is the cable supplied to plug into the cig lighter is very user unfriendly. Its stiff and unresponsive and wont go where you want it. Otherwise very pleased. 09march2010downloaded latest map to pc - free - took about 2 hrs and contrived to use up 75% of my zen lite monthly allowance !!i dont know why it does this - the actual download from pc to satnav only took about 10 mins. Having used it further afield it would be better to be able to switch avoidences eg motorway more easily - should be higher up the menu hierarchy. Otherwise still pleased. ===================================================update 30dec12. Have found maps slow to upload after turning on. I emailed garmin about this and a few other things. They were most helpful - advised downloading latest software. I did this - version 6. 20 - the satnav is now ready for use in no time. My only criticism is why we are not advised when software updates are available. .

Better Than Another I Borrowed!. As i drive mostly without a navigator i borrowed a tom tom from a friend to go into london last christmas - i usually get lost once i get to the embankment!! it was fantastic so i decided to purchase one of my own but went for the garmin nuvi 1310 after studying a which? report. It is better than the one i borrowed - more specific with road names included and even tells you when you reach the exact house. The instructions are not brilliant - but since my son showed me how the functions work i'm sure i will get even more out of it! go grandma!!!!.

Well Made/Straightforward But a Little Disappointing In Use. I bought this slim, wide screen garmin to replace a failed tomtom go 510 which i could not get repaired or even make any contact with the completely invisible and anonymous tomtom organisation - avoid at all costs!. The garmin 1310 is beautifully made and comes with a simple but perfectly working (please note tomtom)attachment bracket. You get the usual in-car charger but no seperate mains unit or mini usb to standard usb cable - this was no problem for me as i have an ipod type mains unit and identical cable which came with a digital camera. If you don't have these it may be a factor in your buying decision. You get a slim quick start guide and set the garmin up by logging onto their website, connecting up and getting a free map update etc. You are then ready to go. Navigation is straight forward and works well with full post code search etc, it is quick to recalculate routes if you miss turns etc. And has a good 'points of interest' selection which enabled me to navigate quickly to the nearest tailway station to meet a train. Another brilliant feature is to simply put your finger on the car icon and get a comprehensive fix on your position - i used this to get rescued when my car broke down in unfamiliar territory. Not so good things - the maps do have recent/new roads but seem in general to be based on very old information. I. E telling you to turn right etc at a point which ceased to be a road junction 20 years ago!(the road just carries on!) - this was not an isolated incedent. Also, safety cameras are identified but no alarm sounds as you get very close to them which greatly detracts from the usefulness of the feature. In summary i'm pleased i bought it - its slim pocketability making it suitable for pedestrian use and high quality build appeals to me and if you need blue tooth it has that as well, but the two caveats noted are serious enough to prevent me giving it more than 3 stars. .

Conclusion of Garmin Nuvi 1310 4

I got this sat nav as an upgrade from my garmin 310 as i felt it was time for a newer unit. I got the unit 3 days ago and as i do use the sat nav alot i thought i would share my opinion. First off when you get the box you are greeted with the sat nav facing upwards and instant impression is 'its bigger but thinner'so no messing about i instantly took it out the box and it felt light smooth matt finish on it, but sturdy i then looked at all the cables, you get the car charger, window suction holder and also a sticker pad for the dashboard which i use because i find the units size gives a rather bad blind spot on the window. Intially put it on the window and let it get the signal, i then went into options were you have the usual garmin settings for map detail from least to max, voiees can be changed and you can also use the 'eco route' and put in what your car does for mpg etc and as your driving along it gives you an idea of your carbon footprint, fuel cost, miles covered average speed etc, it also has a function were if you want to be really economical then you can use the function that tests your acceleration and braking times etc to try help you save. While driving along the unit keeps up with you and with each turns you make which you would expect.

So i put a route into a destination i was going to and knew the road well, also set the settings for shorter route not fastest time as this usually goes to the motorway. The sat nav did try take me another route but i stuck to my guns and not long after it was telling me the road i was turning into, the speed limit along with my speed etc, the unit isnt the fastest for a detour route but that doesnt sometimes matter. The screen is clear but a little difficult the hit the letters sometimes if you are driving, not that i do thisthe only reason i gave this 4 stars is because they havnt given you a cradle that holds the cable, so any time your not using the sat nav you have to tuck away the cable or is slides from the dashboard, but maybe im just being fussy. Overall great unit so far, newest maps loaded onto it with camera updates etc. It takes no time to find addresses and calculate a route after the first time, bluetooth seems loud and clear (though i haven't used it yet while driving), the guidance voices aren't too annoying, the interface is ultra-clear and uncluttered, the menu items and icons are really clear, the address input is very good and the whole thing is very intuitive to use.

The second thing that i'm disappointed by is how much the map updates and safety camera updates cost. This satnav works well, easy to follow and not distracting. Have found maps slow to upload after turning on. As i drive mostly without a navigator i borrowed a tom tom from a friend to go into london last christmas - i usually get lost once i get to the embankment. It was fantastic so i decided to purchase one of my own but went for the garmin nuvi 1310 after studying a which?.

Go grandma. I bought this slim, wide screen garmin to replace a failed tomtom go 510 which i could not get repaired or even make any contact with the completely invisible and anonymous tomtom organisation - avoid at all costs. The garmin 1310 is beautifully made and comes with a simple but perfectly working (please note tomtom)attachment bracket. E telling you to turn right etc at a point which ceased to be a road junction 20 years ago(the road just carries on) - this was not an isolated incedent. Basically i'm happy with this sat nav although the first one that i received had a defective touchscreen and had to be returned. Not that i speed a lot but the garmin covers this and it makes life just that little bit easier. In effect this unit replaces my road angel and my handsfree unit, so it's a 3 in 1 which reduces the clutter of gadgets and wires around my driving area and that can't be a bad thing. Registration of the product with garmin was very easy and recommended (i received a map & software update instantly).

This is my first sat nav and after some research and price comparisons i opted for this the garmin nuvi 1310. Decided to take the plunge and get a sat nav after thinking that i didn't want to lose my map reading skills. I read a lot of reviews before deciding which sat nav to purchase. In the end it was between the tom tom and garmin models, but garmin offered more features for less money. I downloaded the one-off free map update and was ready to hit the road.

It recalculated my route in about 3 seconds when i had to turn right instead of left due to a road closure. If i have to take a left or right turn then immediately need to take another left or right turn, the voice does tend to get it wrong (not enough time for it to speak perhaps?). I'm fully converted to the sat nav now and wouldn't be without it. I bought the 3010 to replace a broken garmin 610 which i used for over 2 years with no problems. After loads of on/offs and no calabration screen disappointment started to set in.

Have used tom tom but prefer garmin you get more for your money. Bought this sat nav after reading reviews on amazon and which web site. Initially had problems with the screen alignment and it was too late to contact garmin. On our return journey we deliberately took a detour and the unit quickly adjusted and told us how to get back on our route. We contacted garmin after the weekend and they talked us through a routine which re-aligned the screen and now it is working perfectly.

I would recommend this, it is easy to use and a nice sized unit. The 'nuvi 1310' gives you everything you need from a sat nav. It is very simple to set up(turn on and wait a couple of minutes for satalite signal and away you go)very easy to use, the speed camera alerts are a welcome addition, auto night dim, clear concise directions with a choice of voice, 4. I have tested it and i am very pleased it recalculates the route very quickly when you go off the beaten track, speaks the road names as you encounter them and it is good at finding the exact house number.

This is my second sat nav, i read all the reviews for this and others and decided to buy the 1310 and now after the first month i am prepared to give it the full 5 stars. From the box it worked right away, i connected my hyc hero via bluetooth and that was perfect, so as well as having a sat nav i now have an outstanding hands free for my mobile.

Good, But Some Issues. Decided to take the plunge and get a sat nav after thinking that i didn't want to lose my map reading skills. I've owned my nuvi for 5 months and i'm glad that i purchased it. I read a lot of reviews before deciding which sat nav to purchase. In the end it was between the tom tom and garmin models, but garmin offered more features for less money. The main features are intuitive and i was able to find my way around them and work them out without reading the manual. Some features i figured out just by playing around with them for a short while. I downloaded the one-off free map update and was ready to hit the road. I've used the nuvi in both city and rural areas, and in rural areas in particular it was invaluable when i didn't have a local map. It recalculated my route in about 3 seconds when i had to turn right instead of left due to a road closure. The points of interest feature has been great with helping me to find petrol stations, restaurants, hotels etc, but be aware that sometimes it may list a place that's 3 miles away, but not the one that's 2 miles away. I'm happy with this feature still as it's free, unlike directory enquiries. Now for the issues. I use the bluetooth feature to connect it to my mobile (sony ericsson w595), and have found on a few occasions that when i end the call it disconnects from my mobile and only reconnects when i turn the nuvi off and on. Very occasionally if i do a search by road name, it doesn't always find it, but will find it if i put in a full postcode, which i don't always have. I have to search for an adjoining road in these cases. The cigarette lighter socket power cable is thick, stiff and difficult to uncoil fully. The cable pulled apart in two pieces today (just below the bulky transformer part or whatever it's called). I think this happened because the cable was so inflexible i had to constantly bend and move it out of the way of my car's gear stick. I've replaced it with a thinner flexible power cable that hangs straight down and out of the way (it also doesn't have the transformer thingy). If i have to take a left or right turn then immediately need to take another left or right turn, the voice does tend to get it wrong (not enough time for it to speak perhaps?). In these situations, i've found that the brightly coloured line showing me where to drive always gets it right, even if the voice doesn't. Overall, i'm pleased with the nuvi. Five months in and it's so far been about 95% correct with mapping out my routes. In the 5% of cases where it gets it wrong, it recalculates the route correctly very quickly. I'm fully converted to the sat nav now and wouldn't be without it. .

So Easy to Use. This is my first sat nav and after some research and price comparisons i opted for this the garmin nuvi 1310. The screen is superb, very clear and easy to view in all lighting conditions. Being one of those people who fiddle first and read the manual later i found the menus immediately easy to navigate and intuitive. I've seen some reviews for these commenting on the touchscreen being poor and the one i have was not good out of the box. The touchscreen needed calibrating but after following the procedure in the manual it was perfect. Beware the procedure in the built in help is incorrect, the manual which can be downloaded from the garmin website has the right procedure. Pity the full manual couldn't have been supplied on cd. The handsfree bluetooth connection works well despite the speaker being at the rear of the device. With a volume setting of 60% a phone conversation was easily heard whilst on the move. Overall a very nice and well designed device. .
