Cheap Garmin nuvi 3490LMT 4

Review and Buying Guide of Cheap Garmin nuvi 3490LMT 4

Everthing seems to be working as advertised for the first 3 weeks of heavy use. One glitch, an early route took us literally into a cow pasture outside of sheffield (where we met another wandering sat nav user). You still need a general idea of where you're going. Like the bluetooth, works well with iphone but not the features advertised with the competition.

I have had the unit for a week now using it every day for route guidance or just as a reminder for the speed cameras when no route is programmed into it. First impressions - well made with a quality feel & glass screen - it looks like a modern smart phone but thinner although a bit wider. Easy to use, i was familiar with the unit after just a few minutes. It has all the information you need on the screen (shown on a user changeable layout) including speed, time and distance to destination.

The cradle for mounting onto the windscreen is excellent with a good additional speaker within. After downloading the app from the android marketplace onto my mobile phone connecting the sat nav to my android phone (htc desire s) was easy & it now automatically connects when the unit is switched on. All my phone numbers can be scrolled through via the sat nav & the hands free speaker/microphone is more than acceptable. Traffic notifications are included with the unit however despite me using the aerial cable i have so far not managed to get a signal for this. I know some cars with heated windscreens can affect the signal but my car dosen't have this feature.

This Is the Way Forward. This neat little sat-nav unit arrived in a very tiny package. It contained the actual sat-nav unit which is thinner than my iphone, the combined power adapter/traffic receiver, screen suction mount and self-adhesive disc for dashboard mount. Also included were quick start instructions. Installation was fairly quick, and consisted of connecting the device to my pc and downloading the latest maps. At this time the software on the device was also updated. I have a fast connection and the total setup time was around an hour. The unit was easily fitted to my vehicle. I tucked the antenna cable in the crevice between screen and dashboard and dispensed with the small rubber suckers. In use the screen is very bright and clear and responds well to touch. The onscreen keyboard is a good layout and has no lag. Easy to find my destination and the unit is well populated with points of interest, the mapping is clear and updates very quickly as you drive. There is a choice of voices and this model also speaks street names. This unit also has voice-activated navigation and unlike previous models requires no remote control. This is a much improved feature. Simply say 'voice command' and you are prompted on screen with recognisable commands, e. G. Navigate home or find address. I am delighted with this unit and even though i have probaly thrown away £258. 59 on something i could have lived without, at least i feel as though i have something to show for my money unlike my last car service. (well that was my argument to my wife anyway).

Good. This is my 1st garmin satnav. I have owned a navman and my last satnav was a snooper syrius snp-500. The nuvi 3490 is a great piece of kit. It logs on to satellites within a second even in the house. I find it easy to connect it to its cradle on the windscreen. Also it's very fast to calculate routes it's great to see the speed limit for the road you are on displayed on the 3490. The 3490 is very thin lightweight with a glass screen. It looks and feels a very well made product. It has an internal 4 hour battery. I find it easy to use with voice commands. It's also nice that garmin has a free phone number in the uk for tech support. I found it easy to add poi with garmin poi up loader software but if you have subscribed to garmin safety camera software and you delete any poi you have to re upload the safety camera data again. It's easy to find free poi on the web - don't pay for themi have not found out how the traffic system works yet and i have still not seen a lane assist junction come up even in norwich city. Garmin tech support told me it only works on 1 junction in the uk. They don't tell you that when buying it i do hope i was given wrong information on this issue if not i need to have a chat with advertising standards. Garmin could not tell me why the 3490 crashed when trying to update my maps or safety camera software and they kept telling me to press volume. Put your thumb on the top left of the screen for 10 seconds to take it in to diagnostics page then mtu and choose mass storage single session. It worked but i had to do this every time i wanted to update maps or safety camera downloads. They asked me to return the satnav. But i solved this by removing my sd card. It now updates fine. I am surprised garmin did not have a clue about this bug. Does anybody know if the safety camera warning works on the side of the road you are travelling on? can you change the bong-bong sound to voice to give you the warning instead?.

Great Sat Nav.. Bought this to replace my tomtom device. When i first connected the device to my pc to download the latest maps and software, it took over 5 hours. When it eventually loaded the 'my garmin' page was still saying that i didn't have the latest software. I rang garmin and they emailed me a pdf with instructions how to download directly from garmin. I have to say that they sent the instructions within two minutes of ending the phone call. Fantastic service. Now i've used the sat nav for a month or so my view is that it's absolutely brilliant. Lots of features, voice command is outstanding, good clear screen and updates very quickly. Ideal when you're navigating around complex junctions. The split screen photo junction is impressive. Expensive, but well worth the money. .

Conclusion of Garmin nuvi 3490LMT 4

When i saw garmin's new releases for 2012 i decided it was definitely time to replace my old nuvi 200 with something more high tech. I am more than satisfied with the 3490 - it has lifetime travel and map updates (i bought lifetime updates for the nuvi 200), lane assist and bird's eye views on roundabouts (brilliant)and you can sync it with your smart phone to use as hands free. I bought the garmin nuvi 3760t a couple of years ago and quite frankly thought it was a terrible product, but having recently dropped it i found myself looking for a new sat-nav. I was apprehensive about buying another garmin product, but it seems that all of the manufacturers make dodgy products now, so based on the reviews i took a chance. I have to say, first impressions have been good; the new interface is very clear and simple to understand and you can customize many of the features such as the new actions buttons that are displayed in the map screen and the look and feel of the dashboard at the bottom of the screen.

There are a few problems though; the device is claimed to be voice activated, but during the process of updating the maps i was informed that voice activation does not work with the uk and ireland maps, which is a bit ridiculous and misleading. Anyway, i will update this review when i have used the unit a bit more(here is the link to my review of the 3760)http://www. It contained the actual sat-nav unit which is thinner than my iphone, the combined power adapter/traffic receiver, screen suction mount and self-adhesive disc for dashboard mount. At this time the software on the device was also updated. Easy to find my destination and the unit is well populated with points of interest, the mapping is clear and updates very quickly as you drive.

Simply say 'voice command' and you are prompted on screen with recognisable commands, e. This is my 1st garmin satnav.

Garmin could not tell me why the 3490 crashed when trying to update my maps or safety camera software and they kept telling me to press volume. It worked but i had to do this every time i wanted to update maps or safety camera downloads. I am surprised garmin did not have a clue about this bug.

When i first connected the device to my pc to download the latest maps and software, it took over 5 hours. When it eventually loaded the 'my garmin' page was still saying that i didn't have the latest software. I rang garmin and they emailed me a pdf with instructions how to download directly from garmin. Lots of features, voice command is outstanding, good clear screen and updates very quickly. I hooked it into the computer and jostled with the pc vs garmin registration process.

Likely a problem with ie and garmin software i thought. I was a bit miffed at receiving a product that needed 5 hours of update time prior to use, but if that was par for the course then thats the way it was. I tried the voice commands and the device threw up an error time and time again. Garmin call centre - long waits, polite staff but operate a system whereby they send you instructions to fix your problem by email, but when it doesnt work, you are back in the queue waiting to be seen to. Not bad but i have evoked the sturdy services of amazon to get me another unit (and by previous experience it will be less than 5 working days).

Overall the unit is good, but if there continue to be technical glitches then its going back for a cheaper unit. I believe if garmin are marketing this as a flagship unit, with the premium to match, is it really acceptable to be sending out untis that require so much input to get updated and appear to have so many technical glitches?. New unit arrived today (one day after return request made), man collected old unit. The replacement already works better with my computer and has updated etc and the voice commands work. Looks like i was given a duff unit first time round.

This sat-nav was an upgrade from my last garmin unit which was around 5 years old (i did not want to pay for the map upgrades, hence the lmt purchase). Fantastic product with much more detailed and intelligent routing, voice command is a fantastic addition. Traffic updates are a must as i travel a lot for work, the reporting is accurate and timely, a significant upgrade from my older unit. I have had the unit for a week now using it every day for route guidance or just as a reminder for the speed cameras when no route is programmed into it. Easy to use, i was familiar with the unit after just a few minutes.

After downloading the app from the android marketplace onto my mobile phone connecting the sat nav to my android phone (htc desire s) was easy & it now automatically connects when the unit is switched on. Traffic notifications are included with the unit however despite me using the aerial cable i have so far not managed to get a signal for this. The split screen showing complicated junctions is really useful & very accurate & overall the screen is the best ive ever seen on a sat nav. 4 operating system - some of the garmin software requires a later version. Although there are alternative ways to download which are offered by garmin which did work with my system a message came up saying this version wouldn't be supported going forward.

Even though i have a broadband connection which is reasonable it took 21 hours to download the software and update the unit, with lots of messing around by me to get over software freezes. I suspect it would be easier/quicker with later versions of the imac operating system though so i can not entirely blame garmin. Get a good case for it to protect the screen from keys etc in your pocket/bag - i have genuine garmin case which is excellent. Registration for the lifetime maps was easy and the unit updated both its formware and the maps easily. I have changed form a tomtom to the garmin and so far have been delighted with the switch.

Excellent. This arrived in a neat package which was very cleaver as it allows you to get to the gps and the cables separatly. It was simple to charge and set up. Registration for the lifetime maps was easy and the unit updated both its formware and the maps easily. The navigation seems to be good and the options are all there. I am still working out how much of it works. I have changed form a tomtom to the garmin and so far have been delighted with the switch. Great looking unit with a nice form which is easy to carry and so will not get left in the car. .

Fantastic!. I have had the unit for a week now using it every day for route guidance or just as a reminder for the speed cameras when no route is programmed into it. First impressions - well made with a quality feel & glass screen - it looks like a modern smart phone but thinner although a bit wider. Traffic notifications are included with the unit however despite me using the aerial cable i have so far not managed to get a signal for this. I know some cars with heated windscreens can affect the signal but my car dosen't have this feature. I am going to subscribe to the additional services on offer via my mobile phone which includes more detailed traffic. The split screen showing complicated junctions is really useful & very accurate & overall the screen is the best ive ever seen on a sat nav. The slight downside was connecting it to my imac running 10. 4 operating system - some of the garmin software requires a later version. Although there are alternative ways to download which are offered by garmin which did work with my system a message came up saying this version wouldn't be supported going forward. Even though i have a broadband connection which is reasonable it took 21 hours to download the software and update the unit, with lots of messing around by me to get over software freezes. (im pretty good with computers having studied them at college). I suspect it would be easier/quicker with later versions of the imac operating system though so i can not entirely blame garmin. Its easy to put in a pocket & can be used in pedestrian mode which i haven't yet tried. Get a good case for it to protect the screen from keys etc in your pocket/bag - i have genuine garmin case which is excellent. Overall im very impressed with the unit & would buy the same one again despite the niggles above. It nearly got 5 stars but lost half a star for the software hassles & half a star for the traffic signal problem. .

The Best Garmin nuvi 2448LMT-D 4

Review and Buying Guide of The Best Garmin nuvi 2448LMT-D 4

I bought this sat nav last week, the main reason for buying it was because it has life time map updates, and the mapping will soon be out of date on my mio navman. The reason i bought garmin instead of navman is because i did in fact buy a new navman but the sound was poor and i rely on spoken instructions to navigate so it went back. The mapping is quite different on the garmin but i was prepared to give it a go, i used it on a 130 mile round trip today in northumberland and i found the following:i tells you to turn right or left when you should really be following the road to the left or right. It doesn't give you verbal instruction at times when you do have to turn, despite the route showing a definite right angle turn.

There is a noticeable lapse before the icon catches up to where you actually areas i mentioned i listen to the verbal instruction when navigating as i do not want to take my eyes of the route and this unit is not good enough for that. I am an emergency response driver by profession and i require a sat nav that is quick, accurate and precise- this unit is not any of those. I will give the garmin a good try out over the next week but if i still have the issues i have encountered it will be going back.

So when you see a discussion about something like 'voice command' for instance. Firstly, there is not a specific manual for this model. The manual covers a number of models, and merely says that some models may not have all of the facilities described, and so there is no way you can tell what your device should or should not do. Secondly, these reviews on amazon are not just for this particular model, although you are given to believe that they are when you look up the model you are interested in.

So when you see a discussion about something like 'voice command' for instance, this does not apply to this modelthe device works very well, however, i like the way it starts up when you connect it to your car's cigar lighter, and tells you it will shut down in 30 seconds when you disconnect. The traffic warnings are also unobtrusive, and pertinent to your journey. Probably best of all, the vacuum connection to the windscreen works wonderfully well, and doesn't fall off after a few miles, as my previous satnav did. On the downside, garmin should produce a manual specific to this model, eliminating the causes of confusion referred to earlier.

Pros

  • Good, but could be much better.
  • Excellent navigation with live traffic feeds
  • Consider this before. Buying TomTom
  • Superb and the best yet.!!!
  • GREAT KIT AT A GREAT PRICE
  • Great Navigation but hopeless Traffic !!!

Cons

  • Problems updating software /maps
  • Did not get along with this device.
  • Item returned and refunded as not fit for purpose.
  • Premium sat nav, only on the paper!
  • There lies madness
  • GARMIN NUVI 3598 TOP END SATNAV? I DON'T THINK SO

Negative Review of Garmin nuvi 2448LMT-D 4.3" Sat Nav with UK and Western Europe Maps, Free Lifetime Map Updates and Free Lifetime Digital Traffic Alerts

Let down by poor reliability and faults. Screen freezes, voice breaks up when giving instructions, voice instruction and map gets out of sync, message keeps randomly appearing that the wrong cable is attached for live traffic when for certain it is not, the suction clips which hold the cable to the screen keep coming off the cable, screen greys over, suction mount keeps coming off windscreen which i have even cleaned with meth spirits. My 6 year old tom tom has less faults and is now in use again whilst i wait a response to return for replacement-which i do hope is better.

Along with this you also get a more natural sounding voice and realistic images of road signs.

Comprehensive Driving Guidance You See and Hear, Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts prepares you to drive through an exit or junction with confidence. As you approach, an animated model uses brightly coloured arrows to indicate the proper lane needed for your route; a friendly voice offers additional help.
Active Lane Guidance Directs You PhotoReal junction view realistically displays junctions and road changes along your route, including the surrounding landscape and road signs. Again, arrows indicate the proper lane to be in.
For complicated junctions, Bird's Eye junction view offers a detailed aerial picture of the road network, looking down as if from overhead.

Tomtom Killer. I have owned tomtom devices for the last 6 years and have got through 3 of them now. Appalled by the consistently poor(non-existent) service offered by tomtom and the fact that my last two devices have basically died and won't even turn on without being plugged in to a power source i decided to try something else. Believe me, this was not a decision i took lightly as i had been loyal to tomtom for years and very nearly bought the new tomtom go 5000/6000. I tried both out extensively and decided against the new generation of tomtom device as it has been released in an appalling state of development and should never have been released - just google reviews for it to see what people have to say! there is very limited functionality and i think this new generation has gone for 'pretty' in terms of graphics rather than a proper user interface. Anyway. The garmin nuvi 3598 is the best satnav i have ever used by a country mile. The touchscreen is clear and responsive, the voice control works! but more than that, the interface is engaging and interactive. It has taken a little while to get used to from being a tomtom user for years but i have persevered and it has been worth it. The performance exceeds anything i have seen from tomtom in a multitude of ways. Here are just a few of them:real-signs are shown which actually look like the ones on the motorwayjunction numbers come up on screen and are spoken making navigation easierthe digital traffic is the best i have ever used, 30 second updates make the information meaningful and you can see delays building long in front of you, helping you make informed decisions about routing. This is far superior to tomtom traffic which i have been using for 4 years and thought theirs was good. (much more detailed information is available: broken down vehicle reported in lane one for example). Place names are shown on the map. Touch a point on the map to navigate to it. Detailed weather information etc. Available to viewgarmin smartphone link actually works unlike tomtom search which was always very clunky. There are a plethora of other features which i am still discovering two weeks after buying the device!the only couple of minor issues i have with garmin are that to date no manual has been released making using the 3598 a bit like 'suck it and see'. Secondly i have seen comments that the arrival time estimated can be overstated by the device. This appears to be true to a degree if the journey is very short or only on minor roads. In reality my tomtom underestimated the journey time, particularly when there was a traffic delay and ultimately i'd rather arrive early than late, therefore the garmin wins for me on this score too!in summary, long time garmin customers will love it as the functionality and sheer usability of the device is fantastic. For tomtom customers, all i can say is give it a go and stick with it. It beats every tomtom i've ever owned hands down. Best tech decision i've ever made. I may never go back to tomtom unless they sort their development, support and usability issues out. .

Consider This Before. Buying Tomtom. I have purchased tom tom for over 20 years however although the hd traffic is good be aware! the availability of the service is appalling. After being asked by tom tom to renew my subscription (50 quid) i thought it was time to ditch them and try garmin. This is an excellent product, the quality is much better than tom tom and the traffic uses the rds traffic system. However if you do want to link to the live traffic through your phone the subscription is much cheaper although you do need to use your phones data service. The product looks and feels like an apple product such is the finish and the screen is much better than rival tom tom devices. It's less bulky although the traffic receiver is external to the device (but very small and built into the wire). The traffic options for garmin are confusing there are three different options one is traffic via the fm, one is via the dab frequency and one is via a smart phone (internet link). The difference between the fm and dab is the speed of the transmission dab is every 30 seconds and fm is every 1-2 minutes. The smart link (phone) system is live. I think i am a convert, it's a shame tom tom provide such a poor service, i doubt they would provide their service availability stats but trust me they are very poor - just read the other reviews here. .

Superb and the Best Yet.!!!. Firstly. I want to address that i give this 4 and a half stars due to a unforgivable issue with garmin which i will mention later. I own the garmin 2460 and after 4 years i thought it was time to upgrade i have also owned other makes (but never a tom tom. I just don't like them. Design wise or interface). Anyway. . I decided to go with the 3598 ltd not just because of the features and beautiful looks. But because i got it cheaper then amazon (£200) in fact. (sorry amazon). And boy i was not dissapointed. Out of the box it's incredibly well made. Glass screen and aluminium body. It just oozes quality. I was already familiar with the interface to some degree. There have been some minor changes to my 2460. . First thing i did was update by connection to my computer. . The software update was a doddle. However. . What garmin neglect to tell you is. The other europeon countries need to be downloaded to a 4+ gb micro sd card. . In other words. An 8gb (max) in this case. . This in my opinion is unacceptable by garmin. (i'm not blaming the machine's performance in any way). . Hence my 4 star rating for garmin themselves. Why oh why would garmin send a premium sat nav out with not enough memory to withstand a full europeon download is beyond me. Shame on you garmin. !!!!. And this is very misleading to many buyers. . That aside. Things still didn't go too well. . Let me explain. . I already had the garmin express on my computer (due to my existing garmin). Plus the plug in for transfer of data. . But. (and i think this is where some reviewers have moaned) google chrome refused to let the plug in work. . So. I switched to internet explorer and everything went well. . Very smooth in fact. . I will point out at this point that i also bought the latest usa northern states because i travel there several times a year. . So the 8gb card was a perfect fit for the full european maps and northern usa leaving just a few mb's left. . By the way. If you have a smartphone. Get the garmin app. It works seemlessly with the unit giving you that extra bit of info that comes in handy. !! so. . Back to the machine itself. . It's quick. Very quick compared to older models. The interface is easy to understand (not to some as i have read). And within several minutes i had it set to my specification. Those that have transferred from a tom tom (and other makes) may find it very different. But anyone with any brains should work it out easily. !!. I have read the negative reviews and in my opinion they are not really justified to give the 1 star rating they have given this machine, due to their lack of knowledge. . It is a brilliant sat nav at getting you from a to b. Plus the interface between a smartphone is also very good giving you that bit extra control there's not a lot this sat nav doesn't cover in abilites. . Hands free phone. Clear speech. Named streets and things to look for when making a direction change. (example. Turn right at traffic lights). Where i live has lots of tricky roads to manouvre and it never faulted. And it's quick at giving directions even if roads or islands are close together. I was very impressed, compared to my older model. . I have tested just about every feature on this sat nav and it's performed impeccably on all accounts. I really don't understand the negative reviews at all. !!!. The screen is gloriously clear, despite it's glossy appearance and doesn't cause much reflection, even in bright sunlight. These new sat navs are more like a smart phone in the way you interact with them. Swipe. Pinch and zoom. It's a dream to use. The voice control is also around 95% accurate. You have to give the sat nav time to finish what she says before you talk. Some lingo's might find it difficult. I'm black country. So i have to curb the way i talk. When i do. It's first time every time. I do like the way you can read the total address now and it gives you the choice to choose which one. . Some reviewer said it did not have altitude readings. . Yes it does. Just press and hold certain info strips to bring up alternative choices. Everythings there that should be. . And if you touch and hold the sat nav signal icon. The actual amount of satellites it's detected are shown and what direction they are to you. The smartphone app works quite well to and when connected opens up several more apps in the menu such as,. Weather. Tracking. Traffic ,etc. Oh. The extra's come as premium payment for those that want everything. . Such as the traffic, weather and parking instantly. But to be honest the basic is well enough informed. . As to the wire for power. Yes it it is a bit on the thick side. But nothing that can't be hidden with thought. I have tucked the traffic cable and power cable behind the panels in my golf. Nothing can be seen at all now. Just use your intanuity and spend some time fitting it. It will be time well spent. So. If your looking for a first class sat nav that looks the business. Does the business. Look no further. You won't be dissapointed. Cheers. P. S. Do not pay more then the rrp price £299. And wait for amazon to get it into stock. .

Conclusion of Garmin nuvi 2448LMT-D 4

After running tomtoms for around 10 years (at 35,000+ miles pa), this was the first time i'e tried anything else. Disappointingly infrequent map and software updates. Traffic services not a patch on tomtom live services. Fortunately, the card is only about 4, but it's a major aggravation when you first open the unit and it won't work properly without itconclusion:mixed feelings for sure. Having read all the reviews of most of the satnavs on the market, i settled for the garmin 2508lt-d.

Clear, no fuss, nice alerts at the top of the screen, easy to setup and it worked out of the box. The best thing about this satnav is the live traffic updates. When on a journey, it will warn you of traffic, estimate (and add) the extra journey time and/or allow you to re-route to avoid. The live traffic is definitely the best reason to get this unit, though i suspect others have the same feature also.

I have to say when i was choosing the unit, the tomtom units seemed much more expensive with live traffic updates though. No problems at all so far and it certainly seems smarter than my old tomtom even with the latest maps etc. I would highly recommend the garmin 2508lt-d. Believe me, this was not a decision i took lightly as i had been loyal to tomtom for years and very nearly bought the new tomtom go 5000/6000. The garmin nuvi 3598 is the best satnav i have ever used by a country mile.

And if you touch and hold the sat nav signal icon. If your looking for a first class sat nav that looks the business. Ranked no 3 in this years auto express sat nav test, no's 1 & 2 are considerably more expensive and offer no better features or quality. It looks good with a large, clear screen and it knows where it's going. I decided to try this top of the range garmin unit. Garmin real directions using landmarks12. Connects to garmin express easily and firmware and map updates are easy to perform ( unlike my experience with the tomtom)overall the navigation experience is very good and the user interface is a lot better than the one used by tomtom. Unable to update maps or firmware without inserting a micro sd card as internal memory is insufficient3.

Love It! Absolutely Knocks the Socks Off Tom Tom. This is a review from a faithful tom tom owner, who has been blown away by garmin 3598! tom tom, you have seen the last of me as i am now a big garmin fan!i have had this garmin nuvi 3598 for a few days now and been testing it. Some slight issues initially because it wasn't reading out the street names but when i downloaded the latest updates it gave me the extra voice which reads those names. Screen is clear, love the magnetic mount and super sleek design. It really puts the very basic tomtom 6000 in the shade. Full of useful functions including the voice command. It works better than expected. Just the odd blip here and there with regards to routes - on fastest route it doesn't always take the best roads in my opinion. Its obviously based its assumptions on speed limits on routes rather than local knowledge. For example, it wanted me to go a longer way around to get to my house when i would normally know of a short cut (down a b road). It took me down the "a" road route as its a 50mph zone but would not have been faster due to traffic. Despite that minor point, i am very pleased i have switched to garmin (even though they are a tad expensive), because i think the added free digital traffic, map updates and speed cameras is a very good offer. I got a free accessory kit too with mine so that helped with the expense. The new tom tom is bulky and very basic and really cannot be fairly compared to this more superior garmin 3598. Its top of the range as i write this review and i believe it to be the best on the market after researching tom toms, and others. Which magazine gave its predecessor a high recommendation, so i am sure this model will follow suit. Even the digital traffic works without that silly little aerial which you are expected to fix to the windscreen! magic! yes the signal increases ever so slightly if i do attach it, but for me, everything is working just perfect without having that wire stuck in front of me as i zoom along! lolgarmin, i take my hat off to you! it's a super unit. Looks so cool in my car and basically i have ditched the audi built in satnav (3 yr old) as my new garmin is far superior and easier/quicker to operate. I have had no update issues, everything works just fine so i would have no hesitation in recommending this garmin 3598 to anyone who wants to invest in an exceptional quality piece of kit. .

Given One These For My Birthday Last Year and Like Lots of Other People Compared Other Brands Like Tom . Garmin premium navigatioi was given one these for my birthday last year and like lots of other people compared other brands like tom tom to see which offers the best feature. I have to say that this really is a very good bit of kit. It has free map updates and uk/ europe traffic for life, and speed cameras for the first year this is brilliant and saves lots of money. And it worth it as this isn't the cheapest thing to buynavigation is easy, full postcode search and poi's for everything. Customised poi on right side of screen eg fuel, parking, services stations. Choose whatever suit you. Real junction photos this is really very good ,as it clearly shows the actual junction you should be in. Most models don't have this. Zoom in on maps is custom, so you can set the size you like, eg close up or wide, for your preference. Or leave in on auto. Large screen, you really don't need a screen any bigger than this unless. The screen is not like other cheaper models if you goto into a store to have a look you can clearly see the difference. Bright, and clear compared to all the others think of crt versus lcd. This brings me on to fingerprints if you are like me i this will annoy you, when the screen is off all you can see is my thumb prints as the screen is very black. So i brought a screen protector and this solved it. Traffic. This is the reason i like this so much, its free both for the uk and europe. Traffic displays pop on on the right stating what is it, and how long for. Although its' come up a few times saying m25 road closed and it wasn't. I don't think traffic is 100% perfect as traffic flow is dynamic. Overall very good. Check out all the specs but basically it does everything. Including bluetooth hands free. I have a few things that i think would make it 5 stars. When the unit displays the photo junctions and you have it paired to your phone ,it does not display the incoming call screen so you cant answer the phone if someone calls you. Although this only lasts for about 30 seconds its still annoying. If you un select auto zoom from settings and manually press the zoom in to where you like it, it wont remember that next time it's turned on. Garmin traffic is not 100% all roads,eg minor roads but sygic traffic offers this. I cant see why garmin cant. Example the road where i drive every day is a b road, and was closed for 10 months, garmin traffic didn't cover this. I know its not that important as i knew it was closed but sygic told me it was closed. Come on garmin. You cant change the really annoying incoming call ringtones blerp blerp. An update please. Apart from that i hope this review helps. I would recommend it. .

The Best TomTom GO 540 Satellite Navigation System

Review and Buying Guide of The Best TomTom GO 540 Satellite Navigation System

Tomtom go live - the ultimate sat nav. I held back from buying the new go live sat nav from tomtom thinking it might be full of gimmicks, but now i have one i am so pleased. I travel a lot with my job, and it made an immediate difference to how i drive and plan my journeys. Local search with google: this is truly awesome and almost makes the previous poi redundant.

It enables you to find just about any named place you want to go, local, or in any town or city. Just type in the name (sainsbury, odeon, fitness first, waterstones, anywhere) and lists appear showing location, address and contact no's so you can pick one and let tomtom take you there. This has to be the best yet.

There is one big reason to purchase the *50 tomtom range, over any other tomtom or sat nav, and that's it's hd traffic service. Hd traffic gives coverage of almost all roads, as opposed to just trunk roads and motorways supported by other traffic systems. Whilst not perfect i have found the more detailed traffic info useful, and it is the best traffic management on the market today without a doubt. However, if you are thinking of upgrading from your *40 tomtom then, although the new version of software is better, it's not a huge leap and may not justify the expense.

Hd traffic is a subscription service, and although press releases for this *50 range mentioned the option of free tmc traffic, mine certainly didn't have this facility. Annoyingly, my 550 also doesn't have an auto-dimming display, although it does have auto night mode. Maybe a software update will remedy. In my experience tomtom easily beats the competiton, and if you don't mind paying for hd traffic then it's a great product.

Pros

  • It should be great, but too many initial flaws get in the way.
  • Excellent product
  • Works great. No update problems
  • Next gen navigation
  • TomTom Go Live - the ultimate Sat Nav
  • TomTom 550 safety camera bug

Cons

  • GO x40 Series offers far better value, TomTom 'advice' unreliable
  • DO NOT BUY A TOMTOM 950
  • Don't Buy a TomTom GO 950 Live
  • Good hardware let down by terrible Ugrades and unstable software
  • Riddled with problems - avoid buying
  • Not yet ready for release.

Negative Review of TomTom GO 540 Satellite Navigation System - LIVE UK & ROI

Not yet ready for release. . Received my unit yesterday and am not too impressed so far. The hd traffic service seems to be down - it gives a strange error about coverage not being available in my area (reading) googling the error revealed that many other users are encountering the same problems and that availability of the hd traffic service is pretty intermittent. It's the weekend so maybe they are doing some upgrades ready for the monday morning rush - we'll see. The unit won't switch between day & night mode.

I suspect that this is a software glitch but, unlike the other review that mentions this, it does annoy me when an advertised feature on a 250+ piece of equipment just doesn't worki've so far had the unit reboot itself on me about three times. This probably indicates that it's having to recover from some sort of internal error. All in all, the 540 feels like a product that has been rushed to market before it's really ready. I have no doubt that tomtom will fix the issues and release new software in due course but it is frustrating that the company would release a product with faults in it just to get it on the market in time for christmas.

Tomtom Live 750. I think this is a really good product. Taken with a slight pinch of salt, which should be standard for any satnav. The live service works with a sim that is in the phone. It is on the vodaphone network. It works in the areas it says it does in europe for the same price. It apparently works by monitoring where other tomtom live units and vodaphone phones are and works out how fast they are travelling, so i presume the more units the more information. Live services are generally good, just knowing how long a traffic jam is, has changed my thoughts of 'must find a different route' to well 10mins i can sit through it. Usually the traffic jam isn't there which is a bonus. I drive in london and it picks up all the jams. It can take me through from south east london to west london and the arrival timing is impeccable. And think, one day when you hit a road/ motorway that is closed you're gonna thank that live service no end and blag to all your mates about how well it did. Local google search is really cool. Just tap in the shop/ garage/ whatever name and it finds it then asks if you want to select it and hey presto your on your way. This also worked in france recently. Some times it doesn't log onto to the live services, but will do within 5-10mins. Did an eco route back from the alps the other day, not sure what that means, but it took us on a spectacular (yet really slow) route through mountains hugging switzerland and germany. I can't see how this was fuel efficient. The routes taken by this tomtom are generally very good, but local knowledge always wins. The new screen attachment was weird at first but good in hindsight. Bluetooth is good with blackberry bold 9000. Sound is very loud and clear. Speed camera warnings are very good. But then i don't speed, yeah that's right. The speedo on the tomtom is excellent, it gives you the speed limit, this was especially good in europe as the car i drove did not have kms on the speedo, so everything was on the tomtom. I always go by the speed on the tomtom as i think it is way more accurate than the car speedo. Again this information is never 100% so keep you eyes peeled. When inputting words the screen sometimes double clicks a word, so not as good as the older machines. One thing i'm really missing on this tomtom is the little compass in the top corner :-(i liked this machine so much that i am purchasing another one for my employees as i believe it will cut driving time enough to justify the expense of the subscription, which you can buy a year long package on here for 60 odd quid. .

Works Great. No Update Problems. I read many of the posts where people had problems updating the maps due to lack of internal memory space at did consider the 550 because of this. I decided to go for the 750 and also get a 2gb memory card also. I waited until i had the memory card before updating the map and then started the update. Everything worked great. I followed the steps prompted in the tomtom software and it looked to me like the memory card was not used or needed. Yes, the internal memory is nearly full from the start but as far as i can see, as long as you use the tomtom software to update everything, all downloads are stored to your pc hard drive before any update happens. It is also advised to perform a back-up before doing an update which again is a couple of mouse clicks on the tomtom software. I would say, do not let any or the update problem posts put you off getting this fantastic piece of equipment. Use the tomtom software which can be downloaded from their website and i am sure everything will work fine. .

Next Gen Navigation. In my experience tomtom easily beats the competiton, and if you don't mind paying for hd traffic then it's a great product. .

Conclusion of TomTom GO 540 Satellite Navigation System

I was very excited to take delivery of my new tomtom 540 live. I used it for a couple of journeys in the afternoon and the mapping was good, more up to date than previous models and the traffic data seemed to be working though i didn't have any hold ups to test it with. Anyway that was all fine until i connected it to the pc with the tomtom home software. This is required to update the maps (corrections are made daily), speed cameras or generally to change anything about the device. Everything seemed to work fine, but in performing this update i effectively broke the sat nav on the first daythis is apparently due to me previously owning a tomtom and using the same computer before, nothing in the manual tells you this, nothing on the software told me this.

Tomtom support replied after 2 days asking for a large amount of technical information including taking a number of screenshots and attaching them to my reply. Amazon's customer service is second to none and a new tomtom arrived on the same day as the old one was collected by courier. My new device is now working great having uninstalled the tomtom software on my pc, however there are some bugs which i have not seen on a tomtom before. 4) the hd traffic information is a bit patchy - it doesn't seem to be working properly all the time and suffers from some periods where it doesn't connect at all. I've owned a tomtom before (albeit one of the very early models) and have been very happy with the overall ease of use, accessories, customer service etc.

I was also keen to upgrade to a model which has traffic information available and was puzzled that the tomtom costs approx. The garmin uses an fm receiver and uses traffic master which as i understand it gets it's information from traffic cameras on the main roads. The tomtom has a sim card and gets real time information from mobile phone users all over the country. Lots of the other tomtom models don't have an sd card slot. Tomtom offers a 30 day free map upgrade.

I held back from buying the new go live sat nav from tomtom thinking it might be full of gimmicks, but now i have one i am so pleased. Just type in the name (sainsbury, odeon, fitness first, waterstones, anywhere) and lists appear showing location, address and contact no's so you can pick one and let tomtom take you there.

Very cleverfuel prices: excellent, with lots of choices and real pricing and of course tomtom will take you to the station of your choice. Iq routes: made a noticeable difference to my journeys when compared to my basic tomtom model. This can only get better as tomtom collate more and more journeys each day to give you better routes from a to b. I've used tomtoms for years and find them to be the best satnavs around. Tomtom have only just (5 january 2010) released a sofware update to remedy the fault.

This is my third tomtom and a replacement for my go 910 model. My eldest son is still using my first tomtom and is looking forward to having the 910. Reviews on amazon have also held me back from the 940 but as time has gone on and my maps have got more and more out of date the temptation to upgrade has increased. Why fork out for the map upgrade service when i can put the cost towards a new machine. Everything works as it should including the live services.

As soon as i turn the tomtom on it automatically links to the iphone, which is more than the apple earpiece does. It would have been neat if there had been a way to transfer my favourites from one tomtom to the other. I would recommend buying the tomtom hard case to protect the 950. It does not add too much to the size and provides good protection to the tomtom. For the past five years i've been happily using my tomtom go 300 on a fairly old map but with so many advances in technology and the high price of maps, there comes a time (usually just after some birthday money comes your way) that you make the excuse to update and start searching for the best option. Someone had told me that the features available on this range had been reduced and that there isn't an sd card slot anymore, they do however sport a 4gb internal memory which is more than enough to take the latest maps and all those little extra's like voices and map colours, however the cost alone made me continue my research. 23gb i started visiting various online tomtom forums where people, like me, were asking why this product was still being retailed with such a small internal memory and why they had 'penny pinched' by removing the card slot. The next thing i did was to visit the tomtom outlet store on their website. I notice that the go 50 range have a micro sd card slot which could get me out of problems in the future but only the 750 live has 2gb of internal memory (the 550 and 530 having 1gb onboard and a micro sd slot).

Tomtom 750. Hi, like many people i have just been through the mill with regard to buying a new satnav. For the past five years i've been happily using my tomtom go 300 on a fairly old map but with so many advances in technology and the high price of maps, there comes a time (usually just after some birthday money comes your way) that you make the excuse to update and start searching for the best option. It was april of 2011 when i started my search, the new go live range was in the shops but much to expensive for my pocket, ranging from £250 for the 1000 regional to £300 for the top of the range 1005 europe. Someone had told me that the features available on this range had been reduced and that there isn't an sd card slot anymore, they do however sport a 4gb internal memory which is more than enough to take the latest maps and all those little extra's like voices and map colours, however the cost alone made me continue my research. My wife had recently bought an xl live iq routes so i had a look at the spec and was surprised to find that it only has a 2gb internal memory and no sd slot. Knowing that the latest map size is 2. 23gb i started visiting various online tomtom forums where people, like me, were asking why this product was still being retailed with such a small internal memory and why they had "penny pinched" by removing the card slot. The next thing i did was to visit the tomtom outlet store on their website. Here you're presented with a list refurbished satnav's at reduced prices and as i'm interested in driving down to the med, i need something with europe on it. I notice that the go 50 range have a micro sd card slot which could get me out of problems in the future but only the 750 live has 2gb of internal memory (the 550 and 530 having 1gb onboard and a micro sd slot). At this point i start investigating the tomtom go 750 live and read everything i can on it. Its features are quite remarkable with live services, voice control, hands free kit, hd traffic, speed camera's, map-share and an active dock which is sadly missing from the xl range. Every forum i go to say's it's a good buy but it comes with a warning. When you first connect it to tomtom home always perform a "backup" first. I will go into this later. I make my decision avoiding the live range because of cost and the xl range because of no sd card slot and small internal memory. The start range (and others) don't offer me what the 750 can so i place my order and count the days until it turns up. The post van arrived quite quickly and i had to temper my enthusiasm in my rush to check it out. After connecting it to my laptop and selecting don't connect to computer ( because it charges faster ), i left it to charge for a couple of hours. Once fully charged the orange light next to the on/off button turns green and i install it into my car for it's first test drive. Everything about this device impresses me. Firstly the active docking system is so easy and my treasured new arrival clicked firmly into place. The verbal instructions are better, in that it reads out the road names (if they have any) and the onboard speaker is good and clear. You do have the option to use your hifi via a radio link or a hard wire but i prefer the onboard speaker , live services work flawlessly giving me fuel prices, weather reports, hd traffic, safety alerts and the google search found all my little test questions. Fish and chips, cinema, supermarket. And so on. Then you can set these as favourites and request to navigate to them verbally. In order to use the voice command, you first have to touch the microphone icon on the screen. This means that you need to mount the thing close to you, my windscreen is quite far forward so i need to mount it on the dash. Unfortunately it starts making errors when the radio's on but with my hifi volume control on the steering wheel, it's no effort to turn the sound down first. One nice little touch is that you can choose your own start up preferences, which, when switching on, will give you a screen of those destinations you go to frequently. One would think that you already know the way to work and to your daughters house but hey-ho. Maybe you're approaching from another direction. I'm lucky in that my car has it's own bluetooth hands free system however the one in the 750 enables my wife to also speak hands free and we no longer have to keep swapping who's phone is connected to the car, depending on who's driving. Ok. Now comes the tricky bit. Updating the map and initiating the micro sd card. You cannot write to any old card and there is a procedure that you have to follow to enable it. For reasons of speed, the maximum size that this device will look at is 4gb. I am using an 8gb class 6transcend sdhc micro card (because it was recommended) but only the first 4gb are looked at. You are now going to connect to tomtom home and you must first select "backup" this is vital as if anything goes wrong you will lose your map and tomtom will say that it's software and therefore is not covered by the guarantee. Before and i repeat. Before inserting any micro sd cards, you must back up your tomtom using the "back up and restore" function on the second page of tomtom home. To initiate the micro sd card, you must then disconnect the tomtom (i also powered down) insert the micro sd card into the slot in the base of the 750, switch on and reconnect to tomtom home. A box will appear asking which drive to use and although they are both indicated as internal drives you should be able to identify which one by available memory (another good reason for using an 8gb card). Select the sd card to accept the download. This box then disappears and you must then initiate the micro sd card by pressing "restore". The map is then restored to the card and once done, your micro sd card is fully functional. You would think that the instructions above would be on the first page of the manual. But you would be wrong and although i was pre-warned with regard to backing it up (thank god), i blindly inserted the micro sd card and searched for how to download my free map update. Eventually i clicked on [tools] and [use latest map guarantee] i had selected the sd card for the target and after an hour long download i disconnected from the computer, rebooted and found that it locked up on the first screen. I looked at my 750 as a drive on my computer, to find that it had not downloaded to the card, the onboard memory was full and it had written something to the card but it might as well be empty as no amount of rebooting would solve the situation. By this time my mood could be described as " somewhat stressed" and after a large brandy, i reconnected to tomtom home and performed a backup which got things working again, i then discovered that i still had problems as some functions would lock up so i did a factory reset which finally got things back to normal. Several days went by before i had plucked up the nerve to try another map update but in the interim i discovered that i had not lost my free update as it was stored on my pc in :documents\tomtom\home\download. Now. I find a link in tomtom home which takes me to a page describing how to initiate the micro sd card. Anyway i follow these instructions as given above in the paragraph that starts "ok now comes the tricky bit" and all is well. I am now using the latest map. Two weeks have passed and i am delighted with my 750 so i try to import my phone book to discover that this function is not available on my lg viewty. The only way to do this is to once again connect to tomtom home and, using your browser, [start] [computer][tomtom] and click on the fifth file down "contacts". This will open the folder and you should look for a text file also called "contacts". If there isn't one (and there wasn't on mine), right click on an empty part of the page and select [new] [text document] and name it " contacts". Clicking on this will open a notepad and your phone numbers can be entered in the following format. "tony","07736632691",m,"default""jane","0292460312",h,"default""boss","0123456789",w,"default"m = mobile, h = home and w = work. Don't forget to save at the end. Now when you select your [mobile phone] [call][phonebook entry] icons on your 750 you will be presented with your phone book. You can also touch the "microphone" icon on the screen and simply say "call" this will again show your phone book and you can initiate the call by either saying the persons name or their list number. Apart from touching the screen once it is totally hands free. This is a brilliant product but with poor documentation. If only tomtom would spend a little money and produce a comprehensive hand book. However once you have mastered the above, i think you will agree that it's worth every penny. Regards and safe drivingrapscallion. .

Tomtom Ticks the Boxes Again.. This is my third tomtom and a replacement for my go 910 model. My eldest son is still using my first tomtom and is looking forward to having the 910. I have delayed upgrading because the only complaint i have about the 910 is its size. Reviews on amazon have also held me back from the 940 but as time has gone on and my maps have got more and more out of date the temptation to upgrade has increased. Then the go 950 live was released and i went for it. I travel a lot with work and rent cars abroad. Put simply i got tired of lumping the 910 around and the maps (uk and usa) were beginning to show their age. Why fork out for the map upgrade service when i can put the cost towards a new machine. I am really pleased with the 950. I have used it in the uk and ireland so far and it has been excellent. A significant improvement on the 910. Everything works as it should including the live services. The 950 has paired with my iphone and now acts as a car kit for the iphone allowing me to ditch the headset/earpiece. As soon as i turn the tomtom on it automatically links to the iphone, which is more than the apple earpiece does. There are a few changes i have had to get used too. I had the 910 set up for the screen to change to blue if my speed crept over 70mph. I cannot seem to do that on the 950 but i have set the speed warnings anyway. I would like to be able to reposition some of the information readouts on the bottom of the screen. It would have been neat if there had been a way to transfer my favourites from one tomtom to the other. Perhaps there is. Who cares because i really really like the new machine. I would recommend buying the tomtom hard case to protect the 950. It does not add too much to the size and provides good protection to the tomtom. Since posting this review i have now tested the live features in traffic. I ignored the first re-route as i was on home territory and was prepared to take the risk that my route was better. Then leaving cardiff i got a traffic warning and a re-route option. I was about to ignore this too when i saw the brake lights ahead, so left the road as recommended and was taken around the traffic to join the m4 one junction earlier than planned. I could have found the re-route myself but would never have thought of using it. Cannot fault the tomtom. I accept that it is only one incident but it saved a significant amount of time. I am now seriously considering taking the subscription to live services when the free month expires. And. The great thing about the size compared with the 910 is that it fits in my wife's handbag much better. .
